About Aveiro

Aveiro is a dynamic medium size city that offers its inhabitants much of what big city life has, but without the urban chaos and without diminishing the quality of life. The focal point of an industrially developed region, Aveiro today is also a city of commerce and services and a growing centre of leisure and culture. It is impossible to speak of Aveiro without making a special note of the water that so characterises it.

The “ria” (inland waterways replenished from both the sea and the river) surrounds and penetrates the city and the extensive stretches of beach just a few kilometers away make the city very attractive for nature lovers and water sport enthusiasts. The delta plane of the city lies in contrast to the beautiful mountainous region to the inland areas of the district.

The University of Aveiro (UA) was founded in 1973 and paved the way in the creation of teaching offers in several knowledge fields. Today, UA is widely recognised as one of the most innovative universities in Portugal, for the quality of its teaching and research and for its cooperation with regional and national business. Its organisation and matrix structure stimulates knowledge exchange, promoting a useful proximity between teaching and research, which results in a very appealing message for national and international students.

With a modern and prestigious architecture, UA occupies top positions in the most important international rankings of Higher Education.

The Department of Environment & Planning was created in 1978 as one of the key university development areas, with a mission to provide academic education, but also a place for research, where innovative products and solutions are developed to contribute to the advance of environmental science & technology. One of the areas with more expertise is air pollution, with a large group of researchers playing an important role at national and international scientific community.
