Summer School - Ecosystems at risk: Improving nitrogen budgets by exploiting satellite data

Dear Colleagues,

In the scope of the FONDA Twinning Horizon Europe project, we are organizing a series of training activities on a yearly basis aimed at developing knowledge on nitrogen modelling deposition field. This Summer School is the second event organized by the FONDA consortium at the University of Aveiro (UAVR; Coordinator) in close collaboration with the consortium partners TNO (The Netherlands) and the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). This Summer School will be held in the pleasant and beautiful island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, from 14-23 July 2025.

This summer school aims at obtaining a comprehensive knowledge base on the potential applications of satellite based remote sensing to constrain the nitrogen deposition estimates across a region. The school will explore in depth the various remote sensing measurements techniques, the retrieval process and how to handle and interpret the derived satellite products. The course will introduce the various applications, i.e. monitoring spatial and temporal variability, emission inversions, model validation and data assimilation. Examples and illustrations will be provided from FONDA results for Portugal and southern Europe.

The participants will have the unique opportunity for interacting closely and exchanging ideas and experiences with the invited speakers and networking with peers in an informal and relaxed environment.

We cordially invite you to attend this stimulating event and look forward to meeting you soon in São Miguel, Azores!
