Summer School - Ecosystems at risk: Modelling reactive nitrogen

Dear Colleagues,

In the scope of the FONDA Twinning Horizon Europe project, we are organizing a series of training activities on a yearly basis aimed at developing knowledge on nitrogen modelling deposition field. This Summer School is the third event organized by the FONDA consortium at the University of Aveiro (UAVR; Coordinator) in close collaboration with the consortium partners TNO (The Netherlands) and the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB).

This Summer School will be held in the pleasant and beautiful city of Faro, Algarve, Portugal, from 21-26 June 2026.

This summer school offers an integrated and hands-on introduction to reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere and ecosystems, from fundamental processes to policy relevance. Participants will explore the reactive nitrogen budget and the modelling systems used to study this budget. The programme covers key atmospheric processes, including chemistry, transport, and deposition, alongside state-of-the-art atmospheric modelling and mapping approaches. The ecological consequences of nitrogen pollution and the role of European environmental policies are addressed to connect science with decision-making.

Through practical exercises, participants will gain hands-on experience with atmospheric stability analysis, chemistry-transport models, deposition and critical load calculations, and satellite data processing, equipping them with concrete tools for research and applied environmental assessment.

The participants will have the unique opportunity for interacting closely and exchanging ideas and experiences with the invited speakers and networking with peers in an informal and relaxed environment.

We cordially invite you to attend this stimulating event and look forward to meeting you soon in Faro, Portugal!
